Genshin Impact Anime Is Still In Production After 4 Years, Studio Confirms

Date:

After four years without updates, Genshin Impact has finally confirmed the current production status of its official anime adaptation, which was first announced in 2022.

Despite the long silence, development of the Genshin Impact anime TV series is “progressing steadily,” according to the game’s combat designer, Aquaria, who spoke at Genshin FES 2026 in Shanghai, China. However, no official release date has been announced.

“Rest assured, it’s in the works,” Aquaria told attendees. “There are no unexpected issues or instability — everything is moving forward as planned.” The anime is still being produced by Ufotable, the renowned studio behind Demon Slayer.

Before confirming the anime’s status, Aquaria offered insight into the lengthy development process behind Genshin Impact. He explained that even a minor game update typically requires at least six months, while larger updates can take a year and a half or longer to complete.

This extended timeline is due to the many stages involved, including camera work for dialogue scenes, animated cutscenes, concept design, multiple revisions, voice recording and re-recording, and programming. These processes take far longer than the “six weeks per version” that some fans have assumed.

Similar challenges apply to anime production, especially for original works and adaptations. Long delays are not uncommon, as seen with projects such as Solo Leveling Season 3 and reports surrounding Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Season 2. Anime adaptations based on mobile games are particularly complex, as they are built on expansive, ongoing stories with ever-growing casts of characters.

Much has also changed since Ufotable was first announced as the studio behind the Genshin Impact anime. The game’s world has expanded well beyond its original region of Mondstadt, while global publisher HoYoverse has launched other successful anime-style RPGs, including Honkai: Star Rail and Zenless Zone Zero, with more projects in development.

At the same time, Ufotable’s priorities have shifted following the global success of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train in 2020 and 2021. The studio is currently focused on completing the three-part theatrical finale of the series, which began with the release of Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle in 2025.

While no official release dates have been announced for the remaining Demon Slayer films, reports have suggested a possible two-year wait for the final installments.
