A 33-year-old local woman was killed after she was believed to have been struck by an unidentified vehicle while crossing the Pan Borneo Highway near the Road Transport Department (JPJ) checkpoint in Sekaloh, Batu Niah, early this morning.
Miri District Police Chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the fatal incident is believed to have occurred at about 6am, involving the victim who was crossing the road from left to right.
He said preliminary investigations found that the woman was hit by a vehicle travelling from Miri towards Niah, with the driver allegedly fleeing the scene afterwards.
The victim was confirmed dead at the scene at 8.04am by a medical assistant from the Batu Niah Health Clinic.
Police have since received a report on the incident and investigations are ongoing to identify the vehicle and driver involved.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
Police are urging members of the public with any information on the incident to come forward and assist investigations by contacting the investigating officer or the nearest police station.
Authorities also reminded all road users to practise safe and responsible driving to help prevent further road tragedies.
