PN Supreme Council Has Final Say on Muhyiddin’s Resignation

Date:

The resignation of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman is not yet official, as the PN Supreme Council, expected to meet this week, has not made any decision to accept it.

PN Election Director Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor explained that under the PN constitution, any resignation of the coalition chairman must be formally approved in a Supreme Council meeting.

He said the council could reject Muhyiddin’s resignation, allowing him to remain as PN chairman.

“Even though he announced it publicly and submitted a letter, the resignation is only valid once it is formally tabled and accepted at the Supreme Council meeting,” Sanusi said at a press conference.

He added that if the council decides otherwise, Muhyiddin could retain the post despite his public announcement. The PN Supreme Council meeting is expected to be held within a week.

Muhyiddin, who is also a former Prime Minister, had announced his resignation after five years as PN chairman, effective January 1. Following his announcement, speculation has arisen over potential successors, including PAS President Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang and Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Moktar.

On another matter, commenting on UMNO’s decision to remain in the unity government, Sanusi said internal burdens among party leaders often make it difficult for them to take decisive action.

“This is the burden when a leader carries baggage. If a risky decision is made and mistakes occur, it will be criticised, forcing us to reverse course. In the future, leaders with such burdens should not be appointed, or it will undermine decision-making,” he added.
