A Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) student has died after being swept away by strong currents while trying to save a friend at Kedondong Waterfall in Batang Kali, Selangor, on Sunday.

The Selangor Fire and Rescue Department said it received an emergency call at 4.46pm, after the man in his 20s got into trouble while attempting to help a friend who was struggling in the water.

Assistant director of operations Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar said the victim was at the waterfall with five friends when the incident occurred. A team of six firefighters from the Kuala Kubu Bharu Fire and Rescue Station was immediately dispatched to the scene.

Rescuers later found the victim about 10 metres from where he was last seen. He was pronounced dead by Health Ministry personnel at the scene.

The victim’s body was later handed over to the police for further action, while the friend he tried to rescue was saved.
