Update: HELP University Cafeteria Explosion Leaves Nine Injured

Date:

Nine individuals were injured in an explosion at an air-conditioning maintenance area in a private university in Bukit Damansara on Monday morning.

Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Datuk Fadil Marsus said the incident occurred at approximately 11.40am.

“The victims include students, management staff, contractors, and foreign workers employed as cafeteria attendants,” he said during a press conference.

Of the nine injured, four were students, two were external contractors performing maintenance work, one was a management staff member, and two were foreign cafeteria workers. Fadil noted that some victims sustained serious injuries, while the rest had minor injuries.

All victims were sent to nearby hospitals for treatment.

The explosion occurred on the fourth-floor air-conditioning maintenance area near the cafeteria, which was not crowded at the time as classes had not fully begun.

“Initial investigations indicate that two technical personnel were working at the site for repair and maintenance when the blast occurred. Some victims suffered burns and were hit by debris, including concrete fragments from collapsed walls,” Fadil explained.

He added that the exact cause of the explosion is still under investigation, and so far, no criminal elements have been detected.

Fire and rescue teams conducted safety checks and confirmed the area was safe. “Further investigations are ongoing to determine the precise cause of the incident,” Fadil said.
