Indonesian Man Jailed 3 Months for Using Someone Else’s Malaysian IC for 12 Years

Date:

A 47-year-old Indonesian man was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment by the Ayer Keroh Magistrate’s Court on Monday after pleading guilty to using a copy of another person’s identification card for the past 12 years.

The accused, Abdul Adi, admitted to the charges before Magistrate Nur Afiqah Radhiah Zainurin shortly after the charge was read.

According to the charge, Abdul Adi used a copy of a 46-year-old man’s identification card without lawful authority or reasonable cause. He reportedly used the ID copy to obtain a trishaw (beca) license from the Historic Melaka City Council (MBMB) in 2023 and to acquire a National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) card.

The offense took place at the Enforcement Division, Melaka Islamic Religious Department (JAIM) around noon last Thursday.

He was charged under Regulation 25(1)(e) of the National Registration Regulations 1990 (Amendment 2007), which carries a maximum penalty of three years’ imprisonment, a fine of up to RM20,000, or both.

Unrepresented in court, Abdul Adi pleaded for a lighter sentence, citing his responsibility to support his wife and school-going children.

However, Melaka National Registration Department prosecutor Mohd Nasrom Mohd Yusof urged the court to impose a stern sentence, emphasizing that the act could compromise national security and public interest.

The court ordered that Abdul Adi serve three months in prison starting from the date of arrest.
