Ex-NGO Head Charged Again Over Misused Humanitarian Funds, This Time in Melaka

Date:

Mohd Hakim Mohd Nor, 39, the former chairman of Pertubuhan Kebajikan Serantau Muslim, appeared in the Melaka Sessions Court today, facing seven counts of dishonest misappropriation of the organisation’s funds.

He is accused of misusing RM576,995.40 intended for humanitarian aid missions in Myanmar, Yemen, Syria, and Palestine, allegedly between June 2019 and May 2021 at a Merlimau, Jasin bank branch.

Mohd Hakim pleaded not guilty to all charges before Judge Elesabet Paya Wan. The offences, under Section 403 of the Penal Code, carry a minimum of six months and up to five years in prison, whipping, and a fine if convicted.

Deputy public prosecutors from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) sought bail of RM200,000 due to the seriousness of the case. His lawyer, Azizzul Shariman Mat Yusoff, requested a lower amount, citing a similar charge in Kuala Lumpur where bail had been set at RM10,000. The court granted bail at RM35,000 with one surety and scheduled March 13 for mention.

Yesterday, Mohd Hakim was charged in Kuala Lumpur over misappropriation of RM207,000 in humanitarian donations from seven years ago.
