Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has confirmed that journalist Rex Tan will be released once police have completed recording his statement.
Saifuddin said the matter was confirmed to him by Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Khalid Ismail this morning.
“Once he is released, he can be called back at any time if needed to complete the investigation. After the probe is finalised and the investigation papers are submitted to the Attorney-General’s Chambers, any further decision will be under their jurisdiction,” he said.
Speaking to reporters at the Mesra Rakyat Project handover ceremony at Kulim Hi-Tech Park today, Saifuddin emphasised that while freedom of speech must be respected, it must also come with responsibility.
“In this incident, the media agency represented by the journalist stated that the views or questions raised did not reflect the organisation’s stance, and they have since issued an apology,” he said.
He added that when complaints are lodged, the police are duty-bound to take appropriate steps as part of the investigative process.
“When there is an act, it invites action. When there is a complaint, the police must consider further action. That is the initial process,” he said, expressing confidence that Tan will continue to cooperate fully with authorities.
“Some believe that freedom of speech, especially for journalists, must be fully defended. Others feel that this incident crossed the line,” he added.
