MetMalaysia Warns Public Over Fake Procurement Offers Circulating On Social Media

Date:

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has denied issuing any procurement requests or offers for works, supplies or services through social media platforms, following reports of a scam involving individuals impersonating its officers.

In a statement on Tuesday, MetMalaysia said it takes the matter seriously after receiving complaints about fraudsters falsely claiming to represent the department in offering non-existent procurement opportunities.

The department stressed that it has never issued procurement requests or offers through messaging applications such as WhatsApp or Telegram, or via any email address other than its official departmental email accounts.

MetMalaysia said it has lodged a police report over the incident and urged members of the public who have received suspicious messages or believe they have fallen victim to the scam to report the matter to the authorities to assist investigations.

The department clarified that all of its procurement activities are conducted exclusively through the government’s official ePerolehan system in accordance with established government procurement procedures and regulations.

MetMalaysia also advised the public, businesses and suppliers to remain vigilant and verify the authenticity of any procurement-related communication claiming to originate from the department before taking any action.
