The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has lifted the temporary restriction on access to the Grok application on the X platform, effective today.
In a statement, the commission said the decision was made after X confirmed that additional preventive and security measures had been implemented for the application.
The move followed a meeting on Jan 21 involving the Communications Ministry, MCMC, and representatives from X, held to seek clarification and assurances on security safeguards and compliance with Malaysian laws related to Grok.
According to the commission, X provided confirmation that the required security measures are now in place.
“As such, after considering the explanations and initial confirmations given, the MCMC has lifted the temporary access restriction on Grok, subject to continuous monitoring by the authorities,” it said.
MCMC stressed that user safety remains a priority and warned that any breach of Malaysian laws would be dealt with firmly under existing legal provisions.
Previously, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the restriction would only be lifted once the commission was satisfied with X’s official explanation. He also noted that the platform had expressed willingness to cooperate with regulators and comply with local laws during a recent meeting in Kuala Lumpur.
The commission added that it continues to monitor internet service providers’ compliance with directives, as well as the effectiveness of content controls implemented by platforms offering Grok.
To date, MCMC has recorded 17 reports related to Grok, including six formal complaints, two police reports, eight complaints submitted via social media, and one First Information Report opened by the commission.
