Malaysia Airports is urging travellers to take extra health precautions following a Ministry of Health (MOH) alert on a recent Nipah virus outbreak in India.
In a public advisory, the airport operator recommended that travellers monitor their health closely before and after their journeys. Measures include wearing face masks in crowded or enclosed spaces, planning travel responsibly, and seeking medical attention promptly if feeling unwell.
The advisory follows intensified health screenings and surveillance at all international entry points by the Health Ministry. While no Nipah virus cases have been reported in Malaysia, the alert comes after two confirmed cases in West Bengal, India, since December 2025.
Authorities are particularly monitoring travellers arriving from high-risk areas and increasing checks on imported animal products. The ministry is also collaborating with veterinary and wildlife agencies under the “One Health” approach to prevent the virus from spreading to local animals.
The public is advised to practice good hygiene, avoid contact with sick animals, and refrain from consuming potentially unsafe food products. Malaysia’s last Nipah outbreak occurred in 1998-1999.
Given the virus’s high fatality rate of 40–75%, which can lead to severe respiratory issues and encephalitis, health facilities are on alert and prepared to implement infection control measures if necessary.
