13MP: Malaysia to Boost Defence with AI, Tighten Border Security and Tackle Drug Abuse

Date:

Malaysia will strengthen its defence and security systems under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), focusing on adopting advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance both assets and personnel capabilities.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in tabling the plan in Parliament, said the goal is to develop a future-ready, integrated, and agile security force capable of protecting national stability amid rising and evolving threats.

“As part of this strategy, we will continue to reinforce land and maritime border controls to curb cross-border crimes and illegal activities,” he said.

Special attention will also be given to enhancing the nation’s readiness in addressing sovereignty and security challenges, particularly in the South China Sea.

To improve immigration and security coordination, the government will introduce a more efficient National Integrated Immigration System, which will also streamline public service delivery.

Domestically, Anwar stressed that public safety remains a top priority, with drug abuse identified as a critical issue linked to at least 28 other crimes, including theft and violent offences.

In response, the government will adopt a holistic approach to enforcement, rehabilitation, and prevention, working closely with law enforcement, treatment institutions, and civil society.

“These efforts reflect our strong commitment to defending national sovereignty while improving public safety and order across all levels of society,” Anwar said.
