Perlis Enforces Statewide Vape Ban, Immediate Closure for Non-Compliant Retailers

Date:

Starting today, vape and e-cigarette retailers in Perlis face immediate shutdown if they defy a newly enforced statewide sales ban. The Kangar Municipal Council (MPK) has completed its public awareness campaign and is now moving into full enforcement mode.

MPK president Affendi Rajini Kanth confirmed that most outlets have already complied with the order, with notices posted to indicate their closure. “We will not entertain any extensions or delays. Any retailer found operating from today onward will be issued an immediate closure notice. Continued defiance will result in the premises being forcibly sealed,” he told the New Straits Times.

The enforcement operation is being carried out in collaboration with the Health Ministry and the police.

The vape ban stems from a May 14 announcement by Perlis Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli, which followed a 2022 ruling by the Perlis State Fatwa Committee declaring e-cigarette use as haram. Perlis joins Johor, Kelantan, and now Terengganu—who also begin enforcement today—in implementing such bans.

The federal government has also indicated intentions to introduce national measures to regulate or restrict vape product sales.
