Hannah Yeoh: Let’s Fight Cartels In KL, MyCC To Join Agencies

Date:

Yesterday, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories), Hannah Yeoh, uploaded a video of the signing ceremony for a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Federal Territories Department and the Malaysia Competition Commission (MyCC) on her social media.

The video, recorded during the signing ceremony on 29 January, was shared on her official social media account with the caption: “Let’s fight cartels. We invited MyCC into Federal Territories agencies to identify cartels. Healthy competition benefits the people.”

Earlier, UMNO Supreme Council member Datuk Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi urged his party to oppose the proposed election for the Mayor of Kuala Lumpur.

He claimed that the election could lead to Kuala Lumpur being influenced not only by political parties and racial sentiments but also by cartels and criminal elements.

“Kuala Lumpur has many entertainment outlets, pubs, nightclubs, massage parlours, and other immoral activities. There is significant underworld presence, cartels, and gangsters. Imagine gangsters using their money and networks to back certain candidates — the Mayor’s office would no longer be independent,” he said.

Hannah Yeoh had also stated that she had instructed her ministry to conduct a feasibility study on holding mayoral elections in Kuala Lumpur as part of efforts to strengthen city governance.

According to a news portal report, she noted that electing the Mayor via public vote was seen as a more practical approach compared to holding local government elections, which would involve electing numerous city council members.
