BMW Drivers Block EV Chargers, Sparks Online Outrage in Malaysia

Date:

A Malaysian netizen has sparked an online debate after sharing photos of two BMWs occupying EV charging bays, despite neither being electric vehicles.

As of November 31 last year, the Energy Commission of Malaysia reported 5,360 public EV chargers across the country, including 3,569 AC chargers and 1,791 DC fast chargers. However, misuse of these charging stations continues to be an issue, as some drivers fail to understand their purpose.

The netizen, @keshydhillon, posted on Threads showing a BMW 2 Series and a BMW X5 blocking access to designated EV charging spots, preventing electric vehicle owners from charging their cars. “We can have 500,000 EV chargers all around the country, but as long as idiots like this keep parking in lots meant for charging, EV adoption will always be difficult,” they wrote.

Another user, @tracylaism, called for stricter enforcement, suggesting fines based on the minutes or hours non-EV cars occupy these charging bays.

The post has sparked a heated discussion on social media about the need for stronger regulations and public awareness to ensure EV infrastructure is used correctly.
