PM Anwar Ibrahim Stresses Careful Comments Amid Malaysia-Indonesia Border Dispute

Date:

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged all parties to express their views on the Malaysia-Indonesia border issue respectfully, without offending their “friends” in Indonesia.

The Prime Minister emphasised that while differences of opinion on border matters are natural, they should not harm the longstanding good relations between the two countries.

“We must preserve our relationship with Indonesia, which has been very strong since 1974. Border negotiations continue at all levels,” he said.

Anwar highlighted that cooperation between Malaysia and Indonesia, from junior officials to ministers and the Prime Minister, has always been very constructive.

“We can have differing opinions, but we must avoid passing harsh judgments or offending our friends in Indonesia, who are working to maintain a very close and positive relationship between the two nations,” he added.

His remarks were made during a Special Parliamentary Briefing on the Malaysia-Indonesia Border Issue at the Dewan Rakyat today.
