Starting September 1, 2025, the Seremban City Council in Negeri Sembilan will officially implement a “Cashless Day” every Friday, accepting only electronic payments. This initiative makes Seremban the first local council in the state to enforce such a policy.
The announcement was made during a joint press conference by Seremban City Councillor Lee Kai Yit, along with Lim Chun Weng, Kok Chee Seong, and Wong Jian Wei. Lee stated that many other states—such as Melaka, Penang, Selangor, Johor, Perak, and Kedah—have already adopted cashless systems in their local councils. Seremban’s move aims to align with the digital age and support the Smart City development strategy.
No Cash Payments on Fridays – E-Payment Only
Starting in September, cash payments will not be accepted at the city council counters every Friday. Residents paying for services like assessment taxes, fines, or facility rentals must use e-wallets, credit cards, or debit cards.
Lee emphasized that cash payments will still be accepted on other working days. The introduction of “Cashless Day” serves as a transitional step to help the public gradually adapt to digital payment systems.
Improving Efficiency and Reducing Risk
He added that going cashless can improve administrative efficiency and reduce the security risks associated with handling large amounts of cash. “Cash transactions increase the burden on staff and require hiring security services for transportation. With e-payments, the process becomes simpler and reduces the chances of loss or theft,” Lee explained.
He urged the public to cooperate and adapt to the new system. The council may consider expanding the cashless policy further, depending on its success.
“‘Cashless Day’ is just the beginning. We aim to move towards a more efficient and modern public service while ensuring convenience for the people,” Lee said.
