Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has stated that the government’s upcoming Cyber Crime Bill will provide a framework to address the promotion of dating apps used by the queer community.
Zahid highlighted that the growing presence of such apps could contribute to an increase in cyber-related offences.
“The drafting of the Cyber Crime Bill is a proactive measure to combat high-tech cyber crimes, including those associated with queer dating apps. While the bill does not specifically mention queer dating apps, the legal framework it introduces will serve as a foundation to prevent abuse of digital platforms, including potential cyber crimes linked to these applications,” he explained in a written parliamentary reply.
He was responding to Che Mohamad Zulkifly Jusoh (PN-Besut), who had queried how the government plans to tackle queer dating apps through the new legislation.
The Cyber Crime Bill is set to replace the existing Computer Crimes Act 1997.
Zahid also stressed that licensed service providers carry the responsibility of curbing harmful content, including dating apps targeting the queer community. He reiterated that homosexuality remains a criminal offence in Malaysia.
