A man in China has been sentenced to eight months’ imprisonment after stealing gold jewellery worth 18,363 yuan (approximately S$3,400) from his unconscious friend following a traffic accident.
The incident occurred around midnight on 4 August 2025 at the Sierting Viaduct in Gulou District, Fuzhou, Fujian. The defendant, surnamed Li, had been crossing the road with his friend, surnamed Zhao, when Zhao was struck by a car.
Theft During Emergency
While the driver contacted emergency services and set up warning signs, Li allegedly seized the opportunity to remove a gold necklace weighing 10.195g and a gold bracelet weighing 12.616g from Zhao. Both pieces were reportedly made of 99.9 per cent pure gold.
He concealed the jewellery in a bag he was carrying. The items were later valued at 18,363 yuan.
Attempt to Cover Up
The following day, Li returned the gold necklace to Zhao’s family after discussions arose about reporting the matter to the police. He claimed he had found the necklace at the accident scene.
However, on 10 August, Zhao’s family discovered that the gold bracelet was also missing, prompting further suspicion and subsequent investigation.
The case has drawn attention online, with many expressing disbelief that someone would exploit a friend’s misfortune for personal gain.
