This Private Island in Scotland Costs Less Than a KL Condo – And It’s for Sale!

Date:

Ever dreamed of owning your very own island? That dream might be more within reach than you think. Eilean Mor, a stunning 30-acre private island off Scotland’s west coast, is now on the market – and it just had its price slashed to RM1.65 million, making it cheaper than the average home in Malaysia’s major cities.

Originally listed at RM1.95 million in 2024, the price drop now puts this idyllic island within range of many property seekers. For comparison, the average UK house costs around £268,400 (RM1.61 million), while a London flat averages a whopping £545,000 (RM3.27 million), according to Zoopla data.

Nestled within the tranquil Loch Sunart near the Ardnamurchan Peninsula, Eilean Mor is accessible by boat or via a causeway at low tide. The island boasts lush wooded areas, sandy beaches, and a thriving wildlife habitat – making it a nature lover’s paradise.

According to estate agents Bell Ingram, the island “offers a unique blend of natural beauty and historical intrigue,” and is ideal for adventurers, birdwatchers, and those seeking true escape. The surrounding waters are rich with marine life, and the island is a sanctuary for seabirds and other native species.

However, potential buyers should take note: the island comes with no planning permission, and it falls under the Sunart Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and Special Area of Conservation (SAC), which means development is strictly regulated to protect its rare ecosystem.

While permanent development may be limited, the surrounding region offers plenty to explore — from hiking trails and ancient woodlands to wildlife cruises, kayaking, and visits to the iconic Ardnamurchan Lighthouse, the most westerly point of the British mainland.

The island has remained in the same family for generations, making this a rare opportunity to own a slice of untouched Hebridean beauty.

Eilean Mor isn’t the only Scottish island on the market. Just last month, a larger 90-acre uninhabited island – Insh Island – was listed for offers over £500,000 (RM3 million). It previously belonged to the National Trust for Scotland and was once home to a man who lived in a cave there for 30 years.

In a world where city flats can cost over RM3 million, RM1.65 million for your own private island might just be the ultimate escape plan.
