A 68-year-old man was sentenced to eight years in prison today by the Sessions Court after pleading guilty to slashing a 20-year-old victim with a machete. Due to his age, the senior citizen was spared from receiving a caning sentence.
Judge Afidah Abdul Rahman delivered the sentence after taking into account several factors, including the accused’s guilty plea, which helped save court time and costs, as well as the seriousness of the offense, the facts presented, and the public interest.
The accused, a resident of Taman Ceria, Bandar Baru Permyjaya, was charged under Section 326 of the Penal Code. This section carries a maximum sentence of 20 years imprisonment and may also include fines or whipping upon conviction.
According to court records, the accused intentionally caused grievous injuries to the victim with a machete—a dangerous weapon capable of causing death—behind a mini mart at Emart Tudan around 2:10 pm on August 2 of this year.
The case was prosecuted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhammad Asymawi Ghazali, while the accused did not have legal representation.
