Health Ministry Confirms Gombak District Health Office Staff Fined For Smoking At Rawang Eatery

Date:

The Ministry of Health (MOH) has officially verified that a civil servant attached to the Gombak District Health Office was the individual captured in a viral video smoking at a food establishment in Rawang. This confirmation follows widespread social media circulation of the incident, which depicted a ministry employee disregarding public health regulations. In a formal statement released on Monday, the ministry detailed that immediate enforcement action was taken against the personnel involved to uphold the credibility of the department.

A compound was issued to the staff member under Section 16(2) of the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2024, also known as Act 852, specifically for smoking in a prohibited area. This legislative framework is designed to strictly regulate the consumption of tobacco products in public spaces, and the ministry emphasised that no person is exempt from these laws. The individual now faces financial penalties as a direct consequence of the violation occurring within a gazetted non-smoking zone.

In addition to the legal compound, the MOH announced that internal disciplinary proceedings will be initiated against the employee in accordance with the Public Officers (Conduct and Discipline) Regulations. Such measures are intended to ensure that the integrity and professional standards of the Malaysian civil service remain intact, particularly among those tasked with safeguarding community health. The ministry maintains that its workforce must serve as an example to the public by adhering to the very policies they are expected to enforce.

The ministry further reiterated that food premises are categorised among the 28 specific locations where smoking is strictly forbidden to protect the general wellbeing of citizens. These gazetted areas are essential components of national health strategies aimed at reducing exposure to second-hand smoke in communal environments. The incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing monitoring and enforcement activities carried out by the authorities to maintain these smoke-free environments across the country.

A firm stance was adopted by the ministry regarding the conduct of its personnel, stating that there will be no compromise for any staff members who breach existing laws. The government remains committed to implementing enforcement in a manner that is consistently firm, fair, and transparent for all individuals regardless of their professional background. Through these actions, the MOH aims to reinforce public trust and ensure that health regulations are respected throughout Malaysia.
