Eerie Figure Appears in Beijing Night Sky During Silent Lightning Show

Date:

Beijing’s Meteorological Observatory issued a blue lightning warning late on the 6th, forecasting thunderstorms with gusts up to force 7 in several districts, including Chaoyang, Dongcheng, Xicheng, Tongzhou, and Daxing.

During the early hours of the 7th, the capital’s night sky lit up with frequent lightning—but curiously, no thunder was heard. While recording the spectacle, a resident captured an unusual black silhouette between the clouds, appearing like a martial arts hero standing on a giant sword, seemingly “flying” through the storm. The video quickly spread online.

Videos showed localized lightning flashing within thunderclouds, with a bright full moon clearly visible nearby. The phenomenon, dubbed “lightning without thunder,” intrigued many on social media.

A Chinese meteorologist, speaking anonymously, dismissed the idea of a real sword-riding figure, explaining it as a coincidence of cloud shapes during a lightning discharge. “During a thunderstorm, positive charges form at the cloud tops and negative charges at the bottoms, creating a voltage difference that produces lightning. As clouds shift, their shapes can temporarily resemble various objects,” the expert said.

Meteorologists further explained that the lightning occurred within an isolated thunderstorm cell—an intense, localized system formed by strong upward air currents. The absence of thunder, they noted, happens when dense clouds muffle the sound before it reaches the ground.
