Tiger Woods Steps Away To Seek Treatment After Florida Crash And DUI Case

Date:

Tiger Woods has announced that he is stepping away from public commitments to seek treatment and focus on his wellbeing, just days after being involved in a car crash in Florida and facing a driving under the influence case.

In a statement posted on social media, Woods said the decision was necessary for him to prioritise recovery and work towards a more stable and healthier future. The move also means he will miss the Masters for the second consecutive year.

The development comes after Woods entered a not guilty plea in court on Tuesday, linked to charges arising from the incident in which his SUV allegedly clipped a trailer and overturned on a residential road in Jupiter Island, Florida.

According to a sheriff’s report, officers noted signs of impairment at the scene and said prescription pain medication was found on Woods. He was also reported to have admitted to using prescribed medication earlier that day and to being distracted while driving.

Authorities said Woods was arrested and later released on bail after the incident, which also involved a refusal to take a urine test, although a breath test reportedly showed no alcohol.

The crash occurred at relatively high speed on a road with a lower speed limit, causing damage to another vehicle. Emergency responders assisted Woods from his vehicle, and no injuries were reported.

Woods has previously taken time away from the sport following a serious crash in 2009, and has also battled a series of injuries and multiple surgeries in recent years, including a major accident in 2021 that severely affected his right leg.

The latest development also means he will miss key duties at Augusta National, including planned appearances linked to a refurbished municipal course project and the traditional Masters champions’ dinner.

Officials from the Masters and PGA Tour have expressed support for Woods, acknowledging his decision to step away and prioritise recovery. His absence also extends to his role on the PGA Tour board, where he had been involved in competition restructuring discussions.

Woods’ legal case remains ongoing as he awaits further proceedings in Florida.
