Malaysia Extends Visit Malaysia 2026 Campaign Until End Of 2027

Date:

The implementation of Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) will now be extended until the end of 2027, as the government moves to strengthen its tourism promotion strategy and adapt to shifting global travel conditions.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the decision was reached during the second National VM2026 Main Committee meeting held today, adding that the proposal will be presented to the Cabinet for further approval.

He explained that the extension is aimed at giving Malaysia more time to intensify promotional efforts, while positioning the country as a safe, stable and competitive destination in the global tourism market. The move also seeks to capitalise on changing travel patterns among international tourists.

General tourism industry observers note that long-term promotional campaigns are often adjusted in response to global uncertainties, allowing countries to better align strategies with evolving economic and geopolitical conditions.

Ahmad Zahid, who also chairs the VM2026 committee, said the decision takes into account current developments, including conflicts in West Asia that began on 28 February, which have significantly impacted regional stability and global tourism flows.

He noted that projections indicate tourist arrivals from West Asia could decline by between 11% and 27%, potentially affecting up to 38 million visitors worldwide and resulting in losses estimated at US$56 billion.

Such disruptions, he added, have also affected international flight routes, increased travel costs due to rising fuel prices, and weakened traveller confidence, all of which are expected to influence global tourism trends in the near term.

The committee, which includes six working groups led by key ministries such as Tourism, Arts and Culture, Communications, Housing and Local Government, and Transport, also reviewed ongoing initiatives and coordinated future promotional plans for VM2026.

Authorities said the extended campaign will focus on strengthening strategic collaborations, increasing tourist arrivals, encouraging longer stays, and boosting visitor spending, while continuing to promote Malaysia as a premier travel destination in the region.
