An unemployed man was ordered to pay a fine of RM7,000 by the Sessions Court on Wednesday after he admitted to committing non-physical sexual assault against a 12-year-old girl. The 54-year-old accused, Ong Sheo Ming, entered his guilty plea following the reading of the charges through a Mandarin interpreter before Judge Nor Aziati Jaafar.
The disturbing incident reportedly occurred on 1 April at approximately 1:30 pm within the vicinity of a national primary school located in Tampoi. According to the facts of the case, the individual was accused of performing a sexual act by exposing his genitals to the young victim.
This act constitutes a serious offence under Section 15(a)(1) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017. During the court proceedings, the defendant, who appeared without legal representation, pleaded for leniency from the bench. He cited his current status as an unemployed individual and highlighted his ongoing struggles in securing a new job as reasons for a lighter sentence.
While expressing deep remorse for his actions, the accused promised the court that he would not repeat the offence in the future. However, the prosecution maintained a firm stance, urging the judge to impose a heavy penalty. They emphasised the gravity of the crime and the necessity of prioritising public interest and the safety of children.
After considering the mitigation from the accused and the arguments presented by the prosecution, the court delivered its verdict. In addition to the RM7,000 fine, the judge ruled that the man must serve seven months in prison should he fail to settle the payment. Furthermore, he was placed under police supervision for a duration of one year following the completion of his sentence.
