Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has ordered immediate intervention to address the hardship faced by students at a school in Beluran, Sabah, who are currently attending classes in temporary tents.
In a social media post, Anwar said the welfare and comfort of students must be prioritised, instructing the Education Ministry (MoE) and the Implementation Coordination Unit of the Prime Minister’s Department to take swift action to resolve the issue.
He expressed concern after a news report highlighted the situation at SK Balaban Jaya, where students are reportedly being taught in makeshift learning spaces, including tents and areas within a mosque due to incomplete school infrastructure.
The matter was previously raised by Likas assemblyman Datuk Tham Yun Fook, who urged both federal and state authorities to provide urgent temporary solutions while awaiting the completion of a permanent school building.
Tham said he had received complaints from parents who were worried that the current conditions were affecting students’ comfort and learning environment, despite an allocation of around RM2 million having been approved for the project.
He added that delays linked to tender processes and construction timelines could stretch the project over several months or even up to a year, making interim measures necessary.
In response, the Education Ministry said it was aware of the situation and acknowledged concerns over access and safety at the school.
The ministry explained that parts of the school infrastructure were damaged due to soil movement and slope instability, making the site unsafe for use.
It added that engagement sessions had been held with the Sabah Education Department, parents and local community leaders to find a workable solution.
Among immediate steps taken, the ministry said students would be temporarily relocated to SK Pekan Beluran, with transport provided to ensure continuity of learning without burdening parents.
It also confirmed that upgrading works at SK Sungai Nangka would be carried out to accommodate student placement while waiting for the new SK Balaban Jaya building to be completed.
The ministry stressed that it remains committed to safeguarding the education and welfare of all students involved.
