The Negeri Sembilan state government has decided not to increase residential assessment tax for the next five years, in line with a Barisan Nasional (BN) manifesto pledge made during the 16th Negeri Sembilan State Election.
Menteri Besar Datuk Ismail Lasim said the decision was made after taking into consideration the financial burden faced by residents who are required to pay the assessment tax.
He said local authorities had previously conducted a review of assessment rates, but the state Executive Council decided at its meeting today that there would be no increase for residential properties.
“We have decided that there will be no increase in residential assessment tax,” he said at a press conference after chairing the weekly Executive Council meeting at Wisma Negeri today.
Ismail added that all residential property owners are required to pay the tax, but the state government did not want to place additional financial pressure on the public by raising the rates.
Meanwhile, he said the First (Special) Sitting of the First Session of the 16th Negeri Sembilan State Legislative Assembly will take place on Aug 18.
The sitting will include the election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker, with Ismail explaining that the Speaker appointed is usually not selected from among the elected state assemblymen.
