Can Ejaculation Relieve Nasal Congestion? Doctor Explains Viral Claim

Date:

A claim circulating online suggesting that male ejaculation can help relieve nasal congestion has sparked widespread discussion. Responding to the trend, Taiwanese urologist Su Hsin-hao said that while the idea is not entirely baseless from a physiological standpoint, it is far from a practical or recommended treatment method.

He explained that nasal congestion is often not caused by excessive mucus, but rather by inflammation of the nasal lining, which leads to swelling and narrowed airways. During sexual climax and ejaculation, the body’s sympathetic nervous system is rapidly activated, releasing adrenaline that causes blood vessels—including those in the nasal passages—to constrict. This temporary reduction in blood flow may ease swelling in the nasal membranes, creating a brief sensation of clearer breathing.

According to Dr Su, the phenomenon is not merely an internet myth. He referenced a 2021 study conducted by an international team of ear, nose and throat specialists, which even earned recognition at the Ig Nobel Prize in Medicine. The findings suggested that the decongestant effect of orgasm within the first 60 minutes was comparable to that of standard nasal sprays.

However, he stressed that despite its theoretical basis, the method is not viable in real-world settings. The effects are short-lived, the circumstances required are impractical, and engaging in physical exertion while unwell—such as during a cold—may leave individuals feeling even more fatigued.

In essence, the claim should be viewed as an interesting piece of medically grounded trivia rather than a reliable home remedy. Persistent nasal congestion may be linked to conditions such as the common cold, sinusitis, allergic rhinitis, or other upper respiratory issues, all of which require proper diagnosis and treatment.

From a health perspective, prolonged nasal congestion can disrupt sleep, breathing, and overall well-being. Medical professionals advise that individuals experiencing ongoing or severe symptoms seek evaluation from ENT specialists or general practitioners, rather than relying on unconventional methods found online.

Dr Su also cautioned that during periods of illness, the body requires adequate rest. Forcing physical activity in hopes of temporary relief may result in greater exhaustion, reinforcing that proper medical care remains the safest and most effective approach.
