Japanese Ramen Shop Bans Phone Use While Eating After Customer Watches Adult Video In Store

Date:

A popular ramen restaurant in Japan has sparked intense debate online after introducing a strict new rule banning customers from using smartphones while eating, with offenders being asked to leave without a refund.

The shop, Niboshi Rambo in Saitama Prefecture’s Kasukabe City, has been listed in Japan’s Tabelog Top 100 ramen stores for nine consecutive years. Recently, it went viral after posting a firm notice stating that diners are prohibited from using smartphones once they start eating.

According to the restaurant, anyone who violates the rule will be immediately removed from the premises and will not be eligible for a refund. The post quickly gained massive attention online, drawing millions of views and sparking heated discussion over whether the policy is too strict or justified.

The owner, Kawada Yuichi, later explained that the decision was not made lightly. He revealed that earlier this year, during a busy lunch service, a male customer in his 30s behaved in a highly inappropriate manner while dining alone.

The customer reportedly watched adult video content on his phone during the meal, despite wearing earphones, with the screen clearly visible to others nearby. The situation escalated further when he allegedly placed condiment containers and even a warning sign in the shop to prop up his phone.

When staff reminded him of the shop’s request to avoid smartphone use, the customer reportedly responded indifferently, prompting frustration from the owner. He said this incident was the final trigger that led to the strict “no phone during eating” enforcement rule.

The restaurant specialises in ultra-thin noodles served in a rich niboshi (dried sardine) broth. The owner stressed that the noodles are best eaten immediately, as even a short delay can affect texture and quality. He added that distracted eating undermines the craftsmanship behind each bowl.

Another concern raised was table turnover. Like many ramen shops in Japan, seating is limited and demand is high. Customers lingering after meals while using their phones can significantly reduce efficiency and increase waiting times for others.

The policy has divided public opinion. Some diners strongly support the rule, saying customers should respect food culture and avoid distractions while eating. Others argue the rule feels excessive and uncomfortable, saying it punishes all customers because of one extreme incident.

In response to growing backlash, the restaurant has restricted comments on its social media posts to limit further disruption, while clarifying that phone use is still allowed before food is served and for quick photos when dishes arrive.
