Ten people — including nine children — were injured when a school bus overturned on a rural road in Texas on Wednesday afternoon, local officials confirmed.
The crash occurred just outside the city in Travis County. According to Travis County Emergency Services District, the injured included the bus driver and nine students. One person sustained life-threatening injuries, while two others were reported to have potentially life-threatening injuries. The remaining victims suffered non-life-threatening wounds.
Authorities say the bus, a 2024 model equipped with seatbelts, veered off the right side of the road before rolling over. The cause remains under investigation, with the Texas Department of Public Safety noting there was a slight curve in the road where the incident happened.
At the time of the crash, the bus was carrying 43 passengers. Superintendent Bruce Gearing of the Leander Independent School District said the accident happened shortly after school dismissal but before any students had been dropped off. The vehicle primarily serves students from a local elementary school.
Images from the scene showed the bright yellow bus lying on its side. Officials have not confirmed how many children were wearing seatbelts when it overturned.
“This part of our Leander ISD family has already endured so much this summer with the floods,” Gearing said. “This tragedy is breaking our hearts. Our prayers and thoughts are with the students and their families, and we will do everything in our power to support them.”
The identities and full medical conditions of those injured have not yet been released. The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.
