Seven workers in Panna, Madhya Pradesh, have struck a potentially life-changing find after uncovering a high-quality diamond estimated to be worth more than US$52,400 (RM214,000).
The 17.96-carat gem, weighing more than three grammes, was discovered at an old mining site that the group had leased. Panna Diamond Officer Ravi Patel later confirmed the stone was of ‘gem quality’, placing it among the finest varieties of naturally occurring diamonds.
Patel said the valuable discovery would be listed for a public auction in October, with authorities estimating that it could fetch at least US$52,400.
The discovery is particularly significant for the workers, who rely on diamond hunting as a possible route out of financial hardship. Such finds can provide a major boost to families in the region, where employment opportunities remain limited.
Panna is known for having one of India’s largest diamond reserves, yet the district continues to face serious socio-economic challenges, including poverty, unemployment and inadequate water supplies.
For many residents, informal diamond mining has become an important source of hope and income, despite the uncertainty surrounding what each excavation may yield.
The latest discovery has therefore attracted attention not only because of the gem’s considerable value, but also because it could potentially bring a major financial windfall to the seven workers involved in the find.
