Thai Authorities Launch Urgent Hunt For Tour Guide After Viral Coral Reef Trampling Incident

Date:

Authorities in Thailand are searching for a tour guide who allegedly allowed tourists to step on coral reefs within Phi Phi Islands National Park, following a viral video that sparked widespread criticism online.

In a statement issued on April 24, park officials clarified that the incident took place near Viking Cave, a well-known snorkelling area. The footage showed visitors diving and walking on coral, raising concerns about environmental damage and the apparent lack of supervision.

The park stressed that it places strong emphasis on protecting fragile marine ecosystems, particularly in high-risk zones such as the snorkelling areas on both sides of Viking Cave. Officials explained that designated swimming zones have been clearly marked using red buoys connected by ropes. The left side of the cave is open for snorkelling, while the right side includes restricted zones where all activities are prohibited due to shallow waters and vulnerable coral formations.

Authorities added that ongoing efforts include public awareness campaigns, daily patrols, and regular communication with tour operators, including tide schedules and restricted swimming hours shared via messaging platforms. Additional buoys have also been installed across various sites to enhance safety and conservation.

Despite these measures, officials acknowledged that violations still occur. Investigations are now underway to identify the tour company involved, with legal action expected against those responsible for breaching park regulations.

According to the individual who recorded the viral clip, the incident occurred on April 20 while they were guiding another group nearby. They claimed the tourist was seen standing directly on coral, while the accompanying guide failed to intervene. The witness also alleged that such behaviour happens frequently, particularly during peak tourist periods when monitoring may be limited.

Authorities have urged the public to report any similar violations, warning that repeated damage could have long-term consequences for the region’s marine biodiversity. They emphasised that preserving the natural beauty of Phi Phi is crucial, as ongoing neglect could lead to irreversible harm to its coral reefs and ecosystem.
