A Japanese national wanted in connection with a murder case in his home country has been deported after successfully evading arrest for seven years.
Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director M Kumar said the suspect, who was listed under an Interpol Red Notice, was removed from Malaysia following a formal request from Japan for assistance in locating and arresting him.
He said the man was initially arrested by Kedah police last year for drug-related and immigration offences, before investigators uncovered that he had been using a false identity and claiming to be a Myanmar national.
Authorities later confirmed his true identity through fingerprint analysis and facial recognition, supported by forensic examination of photographs.
DNA samples were also matched against records from Japan’s database, with Bukit Aman’s forensic division confirming a positive identification.
The suspect was charged in Alor Setar on August 27, 2025, and sentenced to between eight and 12 months’ imprisonment, starting from the date of arrest or sentencing.
Police said the case highlights close cooperation between Malaysia and Japan in tackling transnational crime and strengthening international security efforts.
Officials also stressed that Malaysia would not serve as a safe haven for fugitives attempting to evade justice abroad.
