A family of three sustained injuries after a three-wheeled electric vehicle (EV) they were riding overturned following an alleged brake failure incident along Persiaran Karpal Singh here on Monday.
The 7.50pm incident left Lim Yong Chien, 33, with a fractured little finger on his right hand and a cut on his toe. His wife, Loh Jo Yi, suffered internal injuries and swelling on her right leg, while their three-year-old daughter sustained a forehead injury. The couple’s six-year-old daughter escaped unhurt but was reportedly traumatised by the incident.
Lim said the family had earlier rented the EV at a rate of RM40 for a 20-minute ride along the area’s pavement when the incident occurred.
While driving, he attempted to slow down the vehicle but discovered that the braking system was not responding.
“I tried to brake but the EV kept moving at high speed before I lost control and it overturned, causing injuries to all of us,” he said.
He added that all injured family members were taken to Penang Hospital (HPP) for treatment with the assistance of relatives. His youngest child required stitches to the head, while his wife was given three days of medical leave.
Lim also claimed that the EV operator failed to arrange an ambulance and instead blamed the family for the incident.
“They said we did not take care of our child properly even after I told them the brakes were not working,” he said.
He further alleged that local residents claimed the rental operator did not possess a valid business licence and had previously been warned by authorities.
Following the incident, Lim lodged a police report, calling for investigations, action against the operator, as well as clarification and compensation over the matter.
