A woman in Shanxi province, China, has claimed she discovered a broken battery in her food delivery order from a mid-to-large-sized restaurant, later reporting possible health complications including suspected metabolic acidosis.
According to reports cited by Red Star News, the woman, identified as Ms Wang, said she has been a regular customer of the restaurant for around six years. She ordered takeaway from the eatery and was eating while watching television when she unexpectedly bit into what turned out to be a discarded battery inside the food container.
She immediately contacted the restaurant and induced vomiting on her own. Shortly after, she experienced symptoms including throat irritation and acid reflux, prompting her to seek medical attention. A self-paid hospital examination reportedly raised concerns of possible metabolic acidosis.
Ms Wang’s claim quickly attracted widespread attention online, with many users expressing concern over food safety. She said she later underwent further medical checks due to her symptoms.
Staff at the restaurant said the meals were prepared and packaged in a bulk batch on the day in question and that no other similar complaints had been received. They added that due to the multiple stages involved in delivery handling, the source of the damaged battery could not yet be determined.
Local market regulatory authorities in Taiyuan have since launched an investigation into the incident.
