A 28-year-old man was killed in a horrific road accident after a metal rod pierced his abdomen when the pickup truck he was driving veered off the road, reportedly after he fell asleep at the wheel.
The incident occurred at around 9.30am on April 29, 2026, along a Highway 9 interchange heading towards Bang Bua Thong in Bang Krabue Subdistrict, Sam Khok District, Pathum Thani Province. Police from Sam Khok Police Station, led by investigating officer Pol Lt Wacharapong Thianprathum, rushed to the scene alongside rescue personnel from the Por Teck Tung Foundation.
Authorities found a grey Nissan Navara pickup truck with Bangkok registration parked on the far right lane of a bridge with its engine off. Inside the vehicle, the driver was discovered unconscious in the driver’s seat with a one-metre-long piece of angle iron, about two inches in diameter, lodged in his abdomen.
Emergency responders attempted to revive the victim and performed CPR, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Forensic officers from the Ministry of Justice were later called in to assist with investigations.
Two Myanmar workers, a man and a woman, who were passengers in the vehicle, were also present at the scene. One of them, identified as 42-year-old Mr Chueam, said the victim, who was also their supervisor, had been driving them from Lat Krabang to a construction site in Lat Lum Kaeo District.
He recounted that the vehicle suddenly veered off the road and plunged into a drainage ditch before reaching the bridge. Moments later, a piece of metal from the roadside structure snapped and shot into the vehicle, fatally impaling the driver.
Preliminary investigations suggest the driver may have fallen asleep, causing the vehicle to drift to the right before the front wheel struck a ditch reinforced with angle iron. The impact is believed to have dislodged the metal, which then pierced through the cabin.
Police have documented the scene and will conduct a full investigation. The victim’s body has been sent to the Institute of Forensic Science for a post-mortem to determine the exact cause of death.
