Police in Terengganu have dismantled a MyKad forgery syndicate believed to be led by two men following a raid in Besut on 23 April.
Terengganu police chief Datuk Mohd Khairi Khairudin said the suspects, aged 35 and 39, were arrested during an operation at a house in Kampung Raja at about 10.05pm.
He said the raid initially targeted a drug-related case but led officers to uncover a wider forgery operation involving counterfeit identity cards and related equipment.
Police seized two laptops, two printers, 110 blank cards, mobile phones, a pendrive, portable WiFi devices and a laminating machine believed to have been used to produce fake MyKad.
Authorities also confiscated 12 fake MyKad, two driving licences, multiple documents containing personal data, bank cards, RM500 in cash and 7.1g of syabu.
Mohd Khairi said investigations found that the forged MyKad contained real individuals’ details, but with altered photographs that did not match official records from the National Registration Department (JPN).
He added that the syndicate allegedly used the fake identities to carry out financial fraud, including online loan applications, with 12 approvals involving a total of RM40,000.
Police believe the group had been active for more than a year, with one suspect reportedly having a background in engineering and information technology.
Both suspects tested positive for drugs and also have prior criminal records related to drug offences.
They have been remanded since 24 April and are expected to be charged at the Besut Magistrate’s Court under multiple provisions, including the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, the Penal Code, and the National Registration Act 1959.
