A tourist has died after a high-altitude recreational activity accident at a scenic attraction in Sichuan, China, sparking widespread attention following a viral video of the incident.
According to reports from Chinese media, the incident took place on May 3 at the Maruiyan Waterfall Scenic Area in Huaying City, where the woman was participating in a cliff swing attraction when the safety rope allegedly snapped shortly after she left the platform.
Footage circulating online shows the female tourist being secured with safety equipment before being slowly moved out from the safety zone. Moments before the fall, she can reportedly be heard expressing concern that her harness was not properly fastened, while staff continued the process.
Witnesses said the woman fell from the structure immediately after leaving the platform and reportedly struck the cliff face during the descent. She was identified as Liu, and was pronounced dead while being transported to hospital.
Authorities later confirmed her death and said the scenic area had been temporarily closed for inspection and safety checks. Officials classified the case as a work safety-related incident, with investigations ongoing into the responsible parties.
The company involved, reportedly linked to an outdoor adventure operator known as “Chongqing Exploration Camp,” is also under scrutiny. Local authorities said relevant units and individuals are being investigated as part of the ongoing probe.
The Maruiyan Waterfall Scenic Area announced a temporary closure, citing safety inspections and maintenance works, with operations suspended until May 10.
