PAS Selangor Urges All Parties To End Polemics On Royal Matters

Date:

All parties, including politicians, should stop any actions or political disputes that could erode respect for the royal institution, in order to safeguard stability in the state and the country.

Selangor PAS commissioner Ab. Halim Tamuri said attention should instead be focused on resolving public issues, in line with the royal decree by the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.

He said PAS Selangor firmly believes that all royal decrees, advice and remarks must be received with full respect, etiquette and responsibility, without being politicised or misinterpreted.

“The royal institution is the backbone of stability for both the state and the nation and must be collectively defended,” he said in a statement on Wednesday night.

His remarks came after the Selangor Royal Council recently refuted claims that the Sultan had political interests or interfered in state administration when issuing advice to the state government.

The council had also clarified that the Sultan does not intervene in government affairs, following his address during the opening of the Selangor State Legislative Assembly sitting on April 20.

Ab. Halim, who is also the Paya Jaras state assemblyman, said the royal institution also plays an important role as a check-and-balance mechanism while serving as a symbol of unity among the people.

He welcomed the Selangor Royal Council’s statement, which reaffirmed the role and responsibilities of the Sultan under the Constitutional Monarchy system.

He added that the clarification helped reinforce the position of the royal institution as not merely symbolic, but also essential in safeguarding public interests in accordance with the Federal Constitution and the Selangor State Constitution 1959.
