A 12-year-old boy was killed while his uncle was injured after they were believed to have been crushed by a falling concrete pillar while playing with sand near their home at Kampung Telaga Papan, Semerak, on Friday.
In the incident at about 2pm, the victim, identified as Mohamad Yusof Nor Ismail, died at the scene, while his uncle, also 12-year-old Muhamad Yunus Nasir, was taken to hospital for further treatment.
According to Tok Bali Fire and Rescue Station operations chief, Senior Fire Officer I Fakarudin Abu Hassan, emergency services received a distress call at 2.55pm.
Firefighters said both victims had already been rescued by members of the public before the rescue team arrived at the scene.
“We provided initial treatment before handing over the case to the police and the Ministry of Health for further action,” he said when contacted on Friday.
Preliminary findings indicated that the two boys were playing and digging in a sandy area when the incident occurred.
It is believed that a concrete pillar located nearby suddenly collapsed and fell on them.
Authorities are continuing investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
