An 18-year-old teenager was charged in court on Monday (May 11) following an alleged assault on controversial Singaporean figure Amos Yee during an anime convention over the weekend.
The accused, identified as Bosco Chun Ho Wang, a Chinese national and Singapore permanent resident, faces one charge each of public nuisance and voluntarily causing hurt.
The incident is said to have taken place at about 2.10pm on Saturday (May 9) at level 4 of the Suntec City Convention Centre.
Court documents allege that Chun punched and kicked Yee, with the actions — together with shouting — causing annoyance to members of the public present at the venue.
If convicted of voluntarily causing hurt, he faces a jail term of up to three years, a fine of up to S$5,000, or both. The public nuisance charge carries a maximum fine of S$2,000.
Following the incident, Yee reportedly posted an image online showing injuries to his lip.
The 27-year-old has separately been facing legal proceedings in Singapore related to National Service obligations. He is scheduled for a pre-trial conference on May 22.
Yee was previously deported back to Singapore and charged in March, about a decade after leaving the country for the United States.
This is not the first time he has been involved in a physical attack. In 2015, Yee was slapped outside the State Courts in an incident that went viral online. The offender, Mr Neo Gim Huah, was later sentenced to three weeks’ jail, with the court stressing that vigilante action cannot be tolerated under the law.
