Trump Says Iran Ceasefire ‘On Life Support’ As Peace Efforts Stall

Date:

Hopes for a breakthrough peace deal between the United States and Iran have weakened significantly after U.S. President Donald Trump described the current ceasefire as being “on life support,” amid escalating tensions and rejected proposals from Tehran.

Trump’s remarks came as Iran dismissed a U.S.-backed proposal aimed at ending the conflict, instead insisting on a series of demands that the president labelled as “garbage.” The comments underscore the deepening diplomatic rift as both sides remain far apart on key issues.

Iran has reportedly called for a comprehensive end to hostilities across multiple fronts, including Lebanon, where U.S.-aligned Israel continues operations against Hezbollah. Tehran has also reiterated its stance on sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz, alongside demands for compensation for war-related damage and an end to the U.S. naval blockade.

The situation has raised further concerns over global energy security, with Brent crude oil prices surging above US$104.50 a barrel as uncertainty grips markets. The Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping route for global oil and gas supplies, has seen significantly reduced traffic amid the ongoing conflict.

Trump, speaking to reporters, said the latest Iranian response could jeopardise the fragile ceasefire that began earlier this year. “I would call it the weakest right now after reading that piece of garbage they sent us. I didn’t even finish reading it,” he said.

The conflict has already disrupted international energy flows, with reports indicating that oil exports have been affected and production cuts recorded among major suppliers. Analysts warn that prolonged instability in the region could further tighten global supply chains.

Meanwhile, the United States has imposed additional sanctions targeting individuals and companies accused of assisting Iran in oil shipments to China. Washington says the measures are part of efforts to restrict funding for Tehran’s military and nuclear activities.

As diplomatic efforts stall, the issue is expected to feature in upcoming high-level discussions between the U.S. and China. Trump is scheduled to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, where the Iran conflict is likely to be among the key agenda items.
