A college student who was driving a Toyota Vios was charged at the Magistrate’s Court here on Friday with two counts of murder involving a husband and wife who were riding a motorcycle two weeks ago.
The accused, 24-year-old Danish Raman Kamar Kumaresan, who appeared in a white shirt with black stripes, nodded to indicate he understood the charges after they were read separately before Magistrate Nurul Izzah Hasan Basri.
However, no plea was recorded as the case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court.
Based on the charges, the man is accused of murdering A Doraisingam, 61, and his wife, A Menagah, 56, along Jalan Ampang from the direction of KLCC towards Ampang Point at around 5.30am on 2 May.
The charges were framed under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death penalty by hanging or imprisonment of between 30 and 40 years upon conviction.
If the accused is not sentenced to death, he may also face no fewer than 12 strokes of the cane.
On 3 May, local reports stated that the married couple died after the motorcycle they were riding was hit by a car along Jalan Ampang near Menara Great Eastern.
Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief, Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa, said the 61-year-old man and his 56-year-old wife were pronounced dead at the scene due to severe head injuries sustained in the collision.
