ECRL Cable Theft Gang Busted In Kuantan, Police Nab Five Suspects

Date:

Police have successfully dismantled the ‘Geng Acu’, believed to be responsible for several cable theft cases along the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project area in the district, following the arrest of five suspects in a series of operations conducted between 28 April and 6 May.

Pahang Deputy Police Chief, Datuk Azry Akmar Ayob, said the arrests of the suspects, aged between 29 and 44, led to the resolution of seven ECRL cable theft cases around Kuantan, with estimated losses reaching RM500,000.

He said the suspects were detained in several raids carried out in Kampung Pandan, Jaya Gading, Sungai Lembing and Beserah.

“We found that four of the suspects were actively involved in stealing cables, while another acted as a buyer,” he said during a press conference at the Pahang Police Contingent Headquarters (IPK) on Friday.

Following the raids, police also seized a multipurpose vehicle (MPV), a Toyota Innova registered under a company name, cut cable scraps, cutting tools, and mobile phones. The total value of the seized items was estimated at about RM100,000.

Azry Akmar added that checks revealed all suspects had prior criminal and drug-related records. Four of them also tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine.

All suspects have been remanded to assist investigations under Sections 379, 431A and 411 of the Penal Code.

He further said initial investigations suggest the group is a newly formed gang operating actively around Kuantan.

The arrests were made following seven reported cable theft cases along the ECRL route in areas including Gebeng, KotaSAS and Panching.
