Malaysian-Born Scientist Makes History With Global ‘Oscars Of Science’ Win

Date:

A Malaysian-born scientist has gained international recognition after becoming the first from the country to receive the Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences 2026, often referred to as the “Oscars of Science”.

The 74-year-old researcher from Kuantan, Pahang, was honoured for her groundbreaking contributions in genetic research and gene therapy, particularly in the treatment of sickle cell disease and beta thalassaemia.

She currently serves as Head of the Sickle Cell Branch and Senior Investigator at the US National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. She shared one of the three Life Sciences awards with Harvard Medical School Professor of Paediatrics, Dr Stuart H. Orkin.

Their joint research played a key role in the development of Casgevy, the world’s first approved CRISPR-based therapy, which is considered a major breakthrough in treating genetic blood disorders.

The Breakthrough Prize is among the most prestigious science awards globally, with winners receiving USD3 million (about RM12 million), making it one of the most lucrative honours in the scientific community.

The award ceremony was held in Los Angeles, United States, on April 18.
