The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) in Kelantan detained two men and seized 1,207 kilogrammes of subsidised cooking oil during an operation in Banggol Chicha near Pasir Mas last night.
The raid, carried out under Ops Tiris 4.0 (Integrated) at about 10pm, led to the arrest of two local men aged 22 and 27.
Kelantan KPDN deputy director Aswadi Jaafar said the operation was conducted by KPDN enforcement officers together with the Region 3 Marine Police Force from Pengkalan Kubor following intelligence on a Perodua Alza believed to be used for smuggling subsidised cooking oil to a neighbouring country.
He said officers tailed the vehicle from Lemal Roundabout towards Rantau Panjang before the driver allegedly sped off recklessly after realising authorities were following him.
“The vehicle was eventually intercepted in front of a house, where further inspection uncovered packets of one-kilogram subsidised cooking oil stored on the back seats and inside the vehicle’s boot,” he said in a statement.
Authorities seized a total of 1,207 kilogrammes of subsidised cooking oil along with the Perodua Alza believed to have been used in the operation.
The seized goods are believed to have been intended for illegal distribution across the border.
Both suspects were detained to assist investigations under the Control of Supplies Act 1961, with further investigations ongoing.
KPDN Kelantan warned that strict action would continue to be taken against individuals involved in the smuggling or misuse of subsidised controlled goods.
