Sarawak DLP Students To Learn Computer Science Fully In English From 2029

Date:

The Education Ministry has agreed to allow computer science and design subjects to be fully taught in English for Dual Language Programme (DLP) students in Sarawak beginning in 2029.

Sarawak Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Roland Sagah Wee Inn said the decision represented a major step forward in strengthening the state’s DLP pathway and enhancing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education.

Speaking during the winding-up session of the debate on the motion of thanks for the governor’s address at the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly, Sagah said his ministry is currently working closely with the Sarawak Education Department and the federal Education Ministry to ensure smooth implementation.

The preparations include improving teacher readiness as well as strengthening support systems and teaching delivery mechanisms ahead of the rollout.

Sagah said the Sarawak government remains committed to improving education standards and equipping students with skills relevant to future industries and rapid technological development.

He added that under the RM1 billion allocation aimed at upgrading dilapidated schools in Sarawak, a total of 81 projects have been completed so far.

The projects involved refurbishment and upgrading works on school buildings to improve safety, facilities and overall learning conditions for students.

“Addressing dilapidated schools remains one of our top priorities,” he said.

Although education falls under federal jurisdiction, Sagah stressed that his ministry, together with relevant agencies, would continue to proactively monitor the implementation process and identify critical areas requiring intervention.

The latest move is expected to further strengthen English proficiency among students in Sarawak while supporting the state’s long-term focus on STEM and digital economy development.
