Construction Firm Fined Over Safety Failures At Worksite

Date:

A construction company was fined RM15,000 by the Criminal Sessions Court after pleading guilty to failing to ensure safety compliance at a construction site.

Judge Tuan Irwan Bin Suainbon imposed the sentence after the company admitted to the charge when it was presented by the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) Penang prosecuting officer, Khairul Nizam Mat Piah.

In a statement, DOSH said the company failed to provide, as far as practicable, safe, suitable and adequate access for plastering works at the construction site.

The offence was committed under Regulation 19(1)(b) of the Occupational Safety and Health (Construction Work) (Design and Management) Regulations 2024.

The regulation requires employers to ensure safe working access to protect workers from risks of accidents and injuries during construction activities.

DOSH Penang stressed that failure to comply with safety requirements increases the risk of workplace accidents and endangers workers’ safety and wellbeing.

The department added that it will continue to strengthen enforcement and monitoring efforts to ensure a high level of compliance with occupational safety and health laws.
