The Road Transport Department (JPJ) will expand the use of drones during Ops Hari Raya Aidiladha (Ops HRAA), which will run from May 24 to 31.
JPJ deputy director-general (Planning and Operations), Datuk Jazmanie Shafawi, said six drones will be deployed at identified hotspot locations to improve detection of traffic offences.
He said the drones will be used to monitor violations such as overtaking on double lines and using emergency lanes on highways.
“Unlike the previous Hari Raya Aidilfitri operation, where drones were used at specific times, this time they will be deployed throughout Ops HRAA,” he told reporters after launching the operation.
Jazmanie said a total of 288 accident hotspots have been identified nationwide, including routes such as Kuala Lipis–Gua Musang, Gua Musang–Kuala Krai, Gerik–Jeli, Hulu Terengganu–Kuala Terengganu, Segamat–Mersing, and the stretch from the Menora Tunnel to Sungai Perak.
He added that drone enforcement was first introduced during the previous festive operation, which led to JPJ issuing 5,000 notices under Section 114 of the Road Transport Act 1987.
He said Ops HRAA will be carried out using a comprehensive enforcement strategy based on the Perception of Being Caught (POBC) concept, with increased enforcement presence at key locations, highways, terminals, and accident hotspots nationwide under the slogan “Drive Carefully, Arrive Safely.”
JPJ will focus on nine main traffic offences throughout the operation, including speeding, disobeying traffic signals, overtaking on double lines, misuse of emergency lanes, not wearing seat belts or helmets, queue-cutting, mobile phone use while driving, overloading, and unsafe load carrying.
He also said enforcement on commercial vehicles and public transport will be intensified, focusing on compliance with speed limitation devices (SLD), safety audits, and operator permits.
JPJ will further strengthen enforcement through technology such as enforcement action cameras (EAC) and body-worn cameras (BWC), supported by patrols involving 2,500 officers and staff to ensure more transparent and effective operations.
He added that special operations targeting motorcyclists will also be carried out, as they remain among the most vulnerable road users.
“Any violation of traffic laws will face strict enforcement action,” he warned.
Jazmanie also reminded road users to prioritise safety, comply with traffic regulations, and ensure their vehicles are in good condition before starting their journey.
